Last term students at Auckland’s Selwyn College (Ecoman’s old high school) held an Alternative Transport Day in celebration of World Car Free Day. The day was a huge success with close to 70% of students using alternative modes of transport on the day – even with the threat of rain! The winning teacher walked 3.9km to work and is now planning to walk to school more regularly.
A highlight for many of the students was making pedal-power blended banana smoothies. The modified smoothie-making-bike was provided by Tumeke Cycle Space, a non-profit community run bicycle workshop.
Tumeke Cycle Space is a place where people can go to learn how to repair their bikes, thereby promoting cycling as an affordable, social form of transport that encourages a healthy lifestyle and environment.
ecostore was happy to provide some of our awesome plant-based soaps as prizes for the activities. Good for you Selwyn College for encouraging your students and staff to look for alternatives to driving to school!
